The Ambition

Gigaset is an established communications technology company and European market leader in manufacturing DECT phones. From sustainable packaging to emissions-optimised delivery routes, Gigaset is deeply committed to a more responsible future.

Perhaps the strongest example of this commitment can be found in its “Fair for Future” initiative, which is built on three core pillars: sustainability, inclusion, and fairness. To openly share its green efforts, Gigaset’s website displays content pages that offer comprehensive information on various aspects of its sustainability activities (see fig. 1).

Even though Gigaset has clear green goals, the company acknowledges that the tech industry still has a long way to go to achieve complete sustainability, especially in smartphone production. Therefore, its focus is on practical, impactful steps that improve its products and operations. These include durable designs, easily repairable devices, and long-lasting batteries.

The Challenge

Despite already leading the German market with durable, repair-friendly products and ethical manufacturing practices, Gigaset wanted to do more. Its team looked for a credible and measurable way to further reduce the environmental footprint of its devices, especially at the product’s end-of-life stage. To do so, the company needed a smarter, scalable solution that could close the loop on device waste, while adding value to its existing sustainability initiatives.

The Solution

Gigaset partnered with Closing the Loop to add a circular service to its product offering. Now, for every new smartphone or phone purchased in Gigaset’s online shop, a scrap phone is collected and recycled through Closing the Loop’s network. Customers can simply opt-in for the service during the check-out process of their online purchase (see fig. 2). The service has attracted notable interest, with around 5% of online customers choosing to add it to their order.

This simple yet powerful step supports Gigaset’s ”Fair for Future” initiative by offering a transparent and traceable solution that adds value and drives tangible positive impact.

The Result

Through the partnership with Closing the Loop, Gigaset has taken its sustainability efforts a step further by adopting meaningful action against the growing problem of electronic waste. By supporting the responsible recycling of discarded end-of-life devices, the company helps keep valuable resources in use and harmful waste out of the environment.

The collaboration has helped Gigaset reinforce its sustainability commitments by adding a meaningful step towards reducing the environmental impact of its products and thus closing the loop on tech consumption. It complements other pillars of the company’s “Fair for Future” initiative, such as eco-friendly manufacturing, accessible product design, and fair labor practices.

By including waste compensation into its product offering, Gigaset is proving that even in an industry where full sustainability is difficult, responsible innovation is not only possible, but worth pursuing.
